Guaranteed Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Is BullShit

guaranteed search engine rankings

RANT INCOMING

I’ve run into this a lot lately: guaranteed search engine rankings. A lot of search engine optimization consultants and companies love to claim they offer guaranteed search engine results; especially things like this:

Guaranteed #1 rankings!

TOP #10 Guaranteed!

You Can’t Guarantee Search Engine Results

Anyone that guarantees you anything to do with the search engine results rankings is lying to you or is a fool. A fool or a liar, both are people you shouldn’t work with. So you should stop talking to them ASAP.

Too be fair, it’s not only the SEO consultants & companies to blame, a lot of the blame should go on the customers for asking the impossible.

You: We can try to rank you for New York Lawyer, but it’s very competitive and will take a lot of time.

Client: Okay, I need a guarantee that you can get me to position #1, in 2 months.

You: I can’t guarantee that, and 2 months is not enough time.

Client: Okay, that’s fine. My budget is $50 a month by the way. I don’t want to pay more until I see some results.

You: [Thinking in your head: Is it wrong to smack a client? Can I go to jail for this?]

^ You will go to jail, don’t do it. Especially if you hit a lawyer.

I’m sure a lot of local SEO’s have experienced something similar.

Search Engine Guaranteed Rankings Are Pointless

Don’t look for ranking guarantees, look for money back guarantees. If certain results are not achieved you get some of your money back. Money back guarantees are better than SEO guarantees, but still suck big time.

If someone guarantees you SEO rankings and they’re having trouble delivering their going to use the cheapest and worst ways to get you ranked.

They might get you to position #1, and you might even stay there an entire month. Then you’ll be penalized by Google, and it’ll cost you more money to fix everything they did wrong. It would have been better to hire someone competent in the first place.

In general most guarantees are worthless in the first place. If you need something guaranteed you should hire a reputable company not some guy in basement, and this is coming from a guy in a basement (although not right now).

Think of it this way:

Do Marketing Companies Guarantee Sales To Their Customers?

No, of course they don’t. They deliver a service and if their service continues to perform poorly people stop using the company and they die.

The big problem with SEO is that anyone can call themselves an SEO consultant.

They’ll tell you the sweet lies you want to hear (Guaranteed results!) to take your money, then they’ll do a horrible job.

How To Find a Good SEO Company

Here’s what a good SEO company does:

  • Offers case studies of work they’ve done
  • Explains their process to you
  • Has positive reviews online (Most crappy SEO companies don’t even have reviews)
  • Doesn’t offer guarantees
  • Doesn’t price like this -> $499, $699, $999. Companies that use package pricing can be added to the do not use list.

That’s it. Hope you enjoyed this rant.

Love Facebook ads and Adwords. Paid traffic = ROCKS.

SEO = SUCKS

Even though I'm anti-seo as can be, I still do SEO daily. I enjoy creating sites, and I enjoy ranking sites in the most competitive niches possible.

I made this blog so I can share what I find, and to connect with other marketers out there.

Since there's still so much I don't know, especially when it comes to paid advertising.

For SEO I got you covered :)

  • I DO NOT TRUST SEO AGENCIES THAT REFUSE TO GUARANTEE AT LEAST SOME MEASURABLE SUCCESS!

I have been a digital marketing & SEO professional for over 15 years and I actually think SEO agencies that guarantee nothing must be avoided at all cost. Based on my own experience in the digital marketing world (both as a client and as a service provider), I have noticed that the ones that guarantee at least some measurable progress almost always outperform those who refuse to guarantee anything. Let me explain. Everybody knows that no SEO agency can guarantee a particular ranking on Google and the search engine can do whatever it wants with its ranking algorithm (which changes very often). Even a 10-year-old kid knows that by now. But why would you (as a client) pay thousands of dollars for several months to an SEO agency if the latter cannot guarantee anything? Unless you are the world’s biggest fool, you would not work with such a service provider. Of course, an SEO agency cannot guarantee a specific ranking on Google. But what they can (and should) guarantee is that they will improve your visibility on search engines for the keywords related to your business and they will bring more organic traffic to your website. If an agency refuses to guarantee that they will at least improve your visibility on search engines and bring more organic traffic to your website by a certain amount (e.g., X% higher visibility on Google for your relevant keywords based on the visibility report from Moz.com or SEMrush.com, or Y% more organic traffic to your website within 6 months), then you could be very, very disappointed. Take it from someone who has been both an SEO client & an SEO professional for over 15 years in 3 different countries.

    • Guarantees by crappy companies are worthless. What matters is the company itself. I rather see results the company has had for other people, and how reputable it is. Then I know I’ll get good results.

A 100% guarantee by some small unknown company is worth nothing. As soon as they mess something up or fail to deliver results they’ll run off with your money.

Hiring a reputable company with a proven track record is pretty much a guarantee in a way. If they fail to deliver cancel your contract and move on.

Basically we both agree to the same thing. What I’m saying though is that big and successfully companies don’t make ” guaranteed results” a main selling point. They make their results a selling point.

  • I agree that an SEO firm’s reputation is extremely important. No one should work with a crappy SEO company offering just a money back guarantee as its USP.

There are many ways of checking the popularity (or the crappiness) of an SEO agency. I usually check its website’s popularity on alexa.com & TrafficEstimate.com. Then, I go on its Facebook and Twitter pages to see how many likes/followers it has. I also go on its Google+ page to read about its reviews. I think most smart marketers know that.

A good SEO agency will usually have a few thousand fans/followers on its FB/Twitter pages, its website traffic will usually be at least a few thousand visits per month (check on trafficestimate.com), and it will have lots of reviews on Google+, most of which will be positive.

Based on the above criteria, if you had to choose between two well-established SEO agencies, with only one of the two offering a money back guarantee, you would have to be a fool to choose the one without a money back guarantee. That’s my point.

    • Hey Kam, I agree. The big problem is a lot of people looking for SEO agencies don’t know anything about alexa and checking traffic. Most don’t even check social media! (Which is very easy to fake by the way)

The most important thing should be clients an SEO company has worked with, and if they company is willing to recommend the company.

  • Hi Benjamin,
    Great post.

My inbox get’s daily mails from company’s who think they can take my “business to the next level” or ” can get me to the first 3 spots in google in 2 weeks”
    It’s all crap!

I learned a lot about SEO since i started online, and one thing i can guarantee is that the only one who knows anything about how their search engine works is Google.
No one can guarantee you anything in rankings. One day your top, next day you could be dropped 10-20 pages.Like me!!
What if that happens after you have spent that money on the service (As you said probably in the hundreds).
Also if these companies were any good they wouldn’t be wasting time and resources spamming businesses.

Great post mate, so true in what you say.
    Thanks Benjamin
